Goal.

My name is Nicole Handzel.  I recently graduated with my undergraduate at Mount Ida College majoring in Interior Architecture and Design.  I am currently a student enrolled in the Master of Science in Management with a concentration in Interior Architecture at Mount Ida College.

My goal is to contribute to the body of knowledge by educating the public on the importance of psychology of interior design.

The environment is important because people tend to gravitate towards nature and its simplicity and beauty.  By setting nature and human flourishing factors in interiors to promote wellness, physically and mentally for the end users.

The Simplistic Beauty of Nature.

Interior Design.

Why does interior design effect the psychology of the end user?

The NCIDQ, the board for Interior Design qualifications, defines interior design as “The Professional Interior Designer is qualified by education, experience, and examination to enhance the function and quality of interior spaces.”

Interior design promotes wellbeing through the functionality and aesthetics of the space.  Designers use tools like behavioral mapping and color theory to identify how people move through the space and what colors create different feelings.

Psychology.

How does psychology effect the end user of a space?

Humans subconsciously veer towards nature.  Today, architects and designers are more frequently looking at the psychological effects of humans to design the most successful spaces.  Mind, body, and spirit designs are being influenced  to promote the wellbeing of people within interior spaces.

Human flourishing is important for designers to understand to create an environment that will stimulate this act in people's lives.

Wellness.

How can a designer promote wellness in the interior of buildings?

Designers promote wellbeing in interior spaces by identifying the psychological effects of the specific space and creating an atmosphere through function and aesthetics.  The measurable source that is implemented is WELL Certification.  This focuses on air, mind, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort, and innovation.  These seven categories suggest the important factors in what an individual needs or desires.

Human Flourishing.

Human flourishing is the self-actualization and fulfillment of an individual.

This is implemented by understanding the interiors of spaces should incorporate meaning.  This creates the value of the space and emphasizes he wellbeing of a individual.
